We couldn’t help but notice “B-Corp” (Benefit Corporation) popping up in headlines.
What started in 2006 as a desire for a “culture shift to redefine success in business,” is now over 1,500 B-Corps strong in 42 countries and 120 industries! Companies like Patagonia, Etsy, Ben & Jerry’s, Warby Parker, Method and Seventh Generation are holding themselves to higher, more sustainable standards.
But what are B-Corps? Basically, “B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk.”
Businesses are assessed by a non-profit third party on their practices in five areas, including:
- Environment
- Workers
- Customers
- Community
- Governance
In 2012 when we became one of the first certified B-Corps in Canada (today there are 157!) we knew it was going to be tough but the right thing to do. In fact, you can see our score here – keep pushing us to improve!
B-Corp has also helped us choose the right people to do business with, such as Lotus Foods and Runa drinks, because we know everything from their supply chain to how they treat workers has been rigorously evaluated. We know they aren’t greenwashing as their actions match their claims.
Have you spotted the B logo on the products you purchase or companies you support?
If not, we think you should start looking! Here are some great reasons why:
And you can find the B-Corps near you.
